Mugina is in a rural area south of Kigali that experienced horrific atrocities during the genocide. Because of it*s location those fleeing Kigali during the genocide thought that this would be a safe haven to flee to. As history has shown there were no safe havens in Rwanda during those dark days. Because of the swollen population it is estimated that in this rural area alone, over 30,000 people lost their lives. There is still much trauma in the loss of family and loved ones to be dealt with, along with poverty and malnutrition.

It is our call to bring hope and comfort by letting this community know it is loved and not forgotten. The need for crops that will alleviate the hunger and also turned into producing income is our first goal. This has been addressed by the planting of cassava trees. The vision for a bee keeping project in a communal field is an unusual but effective income producing endeavor that can be done rather inexpensively. Vocational training in tailoring and welding is another project in the planning. Mugina is an area of many orphan headed households struggling just to survive with housing being another area of great need. And then, last but not least, our hope is for the children and young people to have an opportunity to attend school. This means providing supplies, school fees and transportation.

The needs are great and the job seems overwhelming, and yet Solace USA and partnering churches like Harvest Community Church in Oak Creek, WI. are called to strive to make a difference for God's kingdom in Mugina.
